I was in a meeting this morning. A newcomer approach me and told me that he relapse last night. I ask him if he was high now, he said no. you have a sponsor, he said yes. He ask me if I had a few minutes to talk. I said definitely. During our conversation I said make sure you call your sponsor and Cop And Get Well.

Driving home I said sh*t I shouldn’t have said that especially to a newcomer. It’s a terminology we used in the rooms in New York. Now I feel bad. The next time I see him I will apologize.

When I got home I started thinking. I wonder how many of you out there have heard the term, Cop And Get Well… And what it means to you.

    Let me know

    Thanks
    Ivan

I haven’t heard it before. What does it mean?

I don’t understand this at all:

call your sponsor and Cop And Get Well.

Nope…never heard of it here either – and I’m in Upstate NY. A lot of our members are from Jersey and NYC, but I never heard them use the term either. Sounds like something a using heroin addict might say to another. I can guess what it means, but fill us in…

Cop….. to plead guilty to… To a relapse.

Get Well….Start to heal… Back on the road to recovery

My terminology … Cop And Get Well.

!986 to 1988, I was at a 24/7 Therapeutic community called Phoenix House. Saturday nights was NA night. The whole house, ninety of us would walk a mile and a half to a NA meeting. Walking to the meeting I heard one of the counselors tell one of my peers who relapse. When you get to the meeting are you going to cop and share your guilt. The peer said no, that he wasn’t going to share about his relapse. Then the counselor said. Why not don’t you want to get well. Otter no were I said hey dude ( I really said yoo homeboy ) you better Cop And Get Well.

By the end of the meeting and all the way back to the house every one was joking with each other. Yoo you better cop and get well… No you cop and get well… A knuckle heard you better cop and get well… If you lied, stole, cheated, or you had guilt or got high. Everyone favorite saying now was… cop and get well… This went on for over a year at Phoenix House until I graduated.

This morning I must got a flashback and said to a newcomer in the rooms, Cop and get well. This is not a NA saying. This is my sick sh*t from my Phoenix House days.

I just wanted to put that expression out there. To see if anyone can identify.

Although on a personal level outside the rooms I have use it on many occasions. LOL

I see what you are saying..
BUT I am VERY familiar in another sense with the term Cop and Get Well..It is exactly how I live when I am using…the name of the game so to speak…cop your dope and get well…

In treatment we used to say “Drop it like its hot”…as a term for getting rid of the secrets that keep us sick..

    Interesting thread,,,,

    right on..thanx for sharin..

I thought that’s what it might be, just because I knew what the word “cop” could mean, but I’d never heard that term before.

Have you seen the newcomer yet? Just don’t worry too much. You’re a nice person and I’m sure it shows.

I thought you meant for the kid to score some dope from his sponsor so he could get high.

That’s what it means to me as well.

    Cop = to score drugs

Get Well = to “cure” your dope-sickness

If this is really nomenclature of N.A. I think they ought to reconsider. I mean, I love metaphors, but let’s not saturate our recovery with terminology that’s used by addicts. What’s next, does “Appeal to a higher power” get abbreviated into “Tie off and tap a vein”??? Let’s hope not….

I think the word “cop” tends to make dopeheads kinda nervous.
